I dont know what career I want University of Manchester Careers Blog

I don’t know what career I want University of Manchester Careers Blog I was the classic Humanities student who lived by the mantra “Humanities students can go on and do anything with their degree”. As true as this is, it can be frustrating to have so many options. Over the last three years I looked at every career under the sun, but in September I joined the Careers Service on an internship in marketing and communications. And I still don’t know what I want to do for the rest of my life! I’m enjoying this role (I have to say that â€" my boss reads these posts), and marketing is where I see my career in the foreseeable future, but I’ve not pinned myself down just yet. This isn’t my way of telling you that I’m a bad employee with no loyalty (although I did have a drink after work in Man Met Union the other day), it’s me saying there’s absolutely nothing wrong with not knowing what you want to do â€" because you’ll probably have a go at loads of careers in the future anyway. But that’s not helpful is it? I’ve got a few tips as to how you can help yourself. Go do some stuff! They say you come to university to try new things but people sometimes misunderstand this as ‘drink purple things, eat weird food, and go on a binge boxsets’. But that’s not just it â€" there are loads of different societies at the University that you can get involved in. Whether it’s the dance society, or the History society, you could benefit. Some societies have social media or treasury positions, and even post about work experience opportunities in Facebook groups. I personally got involved with the Manchester Media Group at university, which is the student radio, student YouTube, and a weekly newspaper. Take every opportunity â€" snowball effect Whilst I was at the Manchester Media Group I wrote a few articles. Then I took the opportunity to be the Sports Editor, through this I created some videos and podcasts. I literally just grabbed everything I could, as I thought it was the only way I’d find out what I like and don’t like. Because of this I was able to become a Video Production Intern in the summer and work as a match reporter at Manchester City. From joining the Manchester Media Group, the snowball effect meant that I could then get all these other opportunities. I ended up working with BBC Sport, produced a show for BBC Radio, and now work with the Careers Service in marketing. The Careers Service I used the Careers Service for all they were worth when I was a student â€" in fact I still am, as they’re paying me to write this now. Here’s some of what they have to offer that will be helpful to you. Guidance appointments: Pop down to the Careers Service on the first floor of University Place, in the Atrium â€" there you can see one of our staff members and they can get the ball rolling for you. Alternatively, ring 0161 275 2829. Global Graduates: I went to New York for a week to network with some large organisations like the UN, NBC, and US Bank. It gave me a great insight into loads of different organisations that I’d never thought of before… plus I got to see the Yankees. Applications open for this open around February. Student Experience Internships: In the summer of your penultimate year, why not do an eight week internship to check out a sector of work you may want to go into? I personally worked for the University creating videos. Applications for this open around February. Events: Whether it be a ‘Meet the Professionals’ event where you can go hear from professionals in different fields, or the ‘Insight into Broadcast and Journalism’ event, there’s plenty put on at Careers for you to check out. These will be promoted on Careers Link. Clubs: The Third Sector Club and the Media Club are run by the University and often hold talks from professionals or workshops. You can check these out on Facebook too. All

How to Start Exercising When Youve Lost Motivation - Classy Career Girl

How to Start Exercising When Youve Lost Motivation Have you slacked off on your exercise routine? Maintaining your motivation is a very important task when are developing a healthy lifestyle.  Creating a solid routine is imperative to maintaining your discipline and sparking your motivation. Here are just a few tips  to get you back on track and making progress in no time! How to Start Exercising When Youve Lost Motivation #1: Schedule  Your Activity Time Check your calendar weekly and determine when you can go to the gym, work with a trainer, or take a class.  This will help a lot if youve lost motivation to exercise. Make an appointment on your calendar and set  a reminder.  Treat your exercise or activity like a very important  meeting and canceling is not an option! You can also make this a re-occurring appointment so that it’s already on your calendar and therefore, you will not miss an opportunity to have a workout. Try this for 3 weeks or more consistently, and you will feel so accomplished. #2: Pack Your Gym Bag Make sure you are prepared for your workout sessions ahead of time otherwise youll have an excuse to skip the gym.  Your  bag should include workout clothes, socks, gym shoes, toiletries, a towel and music.  Have your gym  bag packed and ready to go on Monday morning.  Starting your work-out sessions early in the week will help solidify your efforts for the entire week. As an alternative, keep a pair  of gym shoes at work or in your truck for a lunch time walk. You can walk up and down the stairwell, walk around the block, download a fitness app, or even rent a DIVY bike (if available in your local area). #3: Update Your Playlist Update your playlist by treating yourself to some new songs. Find some upbeat, high energy songs to help you get active. The upbeat songs will motivate you to push harder during your workout.  Next, find a few slow tempo or instrumental songs for your cool down and stretching time.  Make sure you end your workout by stretching…this will help your muscles recover after the workout. Now you can create a playlist that will play throughout your entire workout session to keep you moving around. Music plays a critical role in most workouts and exercise classes. Your musical selections will keep you motivated and happy! #4: Get a Support System Find like-minded individuals who are  serious about fitness and a healthy lifestyle.  Use social media to find a workout buddy or fitness community. Then make a plan to meet and workout so that you both stay on track and hold each other accountable.  Join a group online, check-in daily or weekly to share your progress.  For instance, you can share motivational quotes, your favorite recipes, and great workout routines. This is a great way to get suggestions, positive feedback, and support from people who can relate to the hard work you are putting into your health. [RELATED: 5 Simple Health Tips We Love] #5: Create a Workout Plan If you go to the gym with a plan, you will have a productive workout session. On a daily basis, you can decide where you want to dedicate your time and efforts.  For instance, one day you can work on your upper body, lower body, back, abdominals. On other days you can focus on cardio. Check out Pinterest  for suggestions on exercises for different areas of your body. I also love finding fitness challenges there too. Each day of the week select an area of focus, but don’t forget to take a few days to rest. It really helps to have a workout plan in place so you do not get bored and its keeps your body guessing what is next. Follow these five simple suggestions and you will be back on track in no time if you have lost motivation. Be patient and start with one step at a time so that you are not overwhelmed. As time goes on, you will start to see progress which will motivate you even more. What do you do when youve lost motivation?

How PEOs are Changing the Way Businesses Operate

How PEOs are Changing the Way Businesses Operate PEO stands for “professional employer organization”. These organizations serve a variety of functions, from payroll and benefits management to other HR services. Outsourcing such services has changed the way many businesses operate, saving time, money, and the hassle of maintaining things like tax compliance. PEOs are definitely here to stay, with some of the top names in the industry serving thousands of businesses in all 50 states. Here’s how PEOs are changing the way businesses operate. What’s a PEO? A professional employer organization is an entity that partners with a business to provide a co-employer relationship with that business. That is to say, once you partner with a PEO, your employees become the shared responsibility of the PEO. With employees from several organizations pooled under a single entity, your PEO can generally provide your employees with access to better rates on benefits like healthcare. What Services Do PEOs Provide? Depending on the PEO, you could potentially have access to dozens of services, but the basic functions of PEOs are relatively the same. Some standard services in the industry include: Benefits and payroll management Tax Compliance Risk management Training Document management Onboarding services With all of these services (and then some) being handled by a third party entity, you can eliminate the stress and cost associated with managing them yourself (or hiring a full-time HR staff to do so). PEO services are available in all 50 states.   For example, business owners in Texas can find a Texas PEO company for your business on Careful Cents. How is This Beneficial? Besides eliminating the cost of a full-time HR staff, there are several other advantages to entrusting your HR and payroll needs to a PEO. Convenience is probably the most obvious advantage, as managing HR and payroll needs on top of running a business can be exhausting. On top of convenience, you can eliminate the worry of remaining within compliance with the IRS. Unfortunately, taxation and things like deductions can be complex and difficult to navigate, which is why it’s best to entrust these items to an expert. A PEO will have tax experts on staff to assist you with any questions or concerns you have related to taxation. Your employees can also contact the PEO in regards to their pay stubs or any other tax-related questions, so you don’t have to endure the awkward “I don’t know the answer to that question” part of tax inquiries. PEOs have experts in many areas, from risk management to help you better identify and manage the risk associated with your business, to onboarding experts that will make the hiring process not only simpler but much quicker. A quicker hiring process, better benefits package and payroll management means that you’re setting yourself apart from your competition and attracting more qualified candidates to work for your business. Problems with payroll can become extremely frustrating for new and seasoned employees alike, causing them to seek other employment options (usually with competing companies). Keep your employees happy, your business in compliance, and all aspects of your HR department running efficiently by trying out one of these great PEO companies for 2019. Business Is Now More Efficient An efficient business is a profitable one. PEOs help increase your business’s efficiency, and therefore boost growth and reduce employee turnover rates. Employees will feel more confident in their compensation, as well as their benefits management when you’re partnered with a PEO. Happy employees can mean greater participation and production numbers. It’s infinitely easier to inspire and motivate employees who are happy with their compensation than ones who are not. With more to offer potential employees, you’ll be able to attract well-qualified candidates to your positions. Better employees are invaluable to a growing business, as one of the biggest struggles small businesses face is finding the right help. Is it Right For Me? Whether or not your business needs the services of a certified PEO is completely dependent on your business situation. Some PEOs only offer their services to businesses with a certain number of employees, so be sure to check the PEOs service threshold before proceeding. PEOs will also incur a certain cost for your business, usually based on a per-employee rate, yearly rate, or even a percent of payroll managed rate. The payment structure varies among differing agencies, so do your research and be sure you understand the structure of the PEO you choose before signing a contract. If you’re constantly getting fined by the IRS for non-compliance or payroll errors, then a PEO may be just what you need to stay out of hot water. IRS fees can add up over time, especially with recurring errors. You don’t want to spend thousands on fees when you can simply outsource your payroll and keep everything within compliance. Do PEOs Help Run My Business? A common misconception about PEOs is that they help run businesses. This technically isn’t true; rather, PEOs work to help manage your HR department and payroll services. The co-employer relationship doesn’t exactly mean that your PEO will help you make difficult growth decisions or provide any advice on how to increase sales and revenue. Conclusion The PEO business model has actually been around for many years but has only recently begun to gain some traction in the business world. Thousands of small to medium sized businesses all over the country now entrust their HR and payroll services to the care of a PEO, increasing their efficiency, reducing turnover, and attracting the right candidates with great benefits packages.

How Caring For The Environment Can Translate into Sales As A Solopreneur

How Caring For The Environment Can Translate into Sales As A Solopreneur There are almost 40 million solopreneurs in the United States. That number isonly expected to rise in the coming years. As a solopreneur, you should know that you are not alone. On that same vein, it also means that you are facing competition from other solopreneurs as well as multi-billion dollar corporations. In order todifferentiate your business and riseto the top, you will have to work hard, believe in your business and make plenty of sales. In addition, it certainly helps if your business is in alignment with environmental sustainability efforts. This will allow you to connect with potential businesses and customers that believe in the preservation of our earth much easier. What Happens If You Don’t Make Sales? Everyone knows the answer to this question. However, if you don’t, your business will absolutely crash and burn without sales. It is not enough to send a few emails and post on your personal social media account. You are going to have to roll your sleeves up and get dirty. For some people, sales is natural. For others, it is askill that will take hours of learningand practicing. The better you get, the less amount of time you will have to spend on sales efforts. While it may be difficult to face constant rejection when you first begin making sales calls and reaching out to potential customers, there is a secret weapon that can certainly make the sales process a bit easier to stomach. That secret; making a strong connection with your potential customers before they buy. How Practicing Sustainability Can Increase Your Sales Beingenvironmentally conscious as a solopreneurmay seem like it is inconsequential. However, it is a differentiating factor that will take minimum effort since you are running such a small operation. For instance, if you are paperless and only use environmentally friendly vendors and products, you will be able to effectively tap into an otherwise uninterested market. This will make those sales calls much easier, since you will be in alignment with a niche cohort of society that is looking for your type of product or service. In addition, there are many sustainable efforts that aretax write offs as well as cost savingssuch as adding solar panels to your home. Obviously, the best reason to implement sustainable practices is to help to preserve our beautiful planet, but if this is not enough of a reason for you, then look at all of the potential benefits of sustainability instead. Make Sales Your Way Though sales calls can be intimidating, if you are able to lead them with an introduction that connects you to your customers, it makes for a much more comfortable call. It is important that you be comfortable when you reach out to potential customers, so if you are not comfortable with being sustainable, then it may not be the best approach for you. However, if you are, the  passion that you have for your business  as well as the environment will be sure to increase your sales to customers that are just as passionate about preserving the earth.

Get Past Job Search Obstacles - Hallie Crawford

Get Past Job Search Obstacles If youre like most people searching for a job, youll run into some obstacles. Many of our career coaching clients here at HallieCrawford.com say they can identify with one or more of these job search obstacles: Lacking confidence and not being prepared When I give speeches only about 13% of people have a solid elevator pitch.   Falling into a black hole with the HR department â€" Without the right job search plan and approach, people often don’t get a response from their prospective companies. Not being familiar and up-to-date with new ways to job search online â€" Many people lack planning and overlook their online footprint in their job search. The key to your job search is to diversify your strategies AND focus on the ones that pay the best dividends… Get Past the Obstacles To get past some of the job search obstacles, here are some ways to get your foot in the door with prospective employers that have worked well for my career coaching clients: Mail in or FedEx your resume.  Client example: Cheryl sent her resume by FedEx and was called quickly for an interview. It helped her stand out from the online resumes for this particular company. Network your way into the company through a friend, family member.  Client example: Maggie got an interview by finding a connection through a friend on LinkedIn for a company she wanted. Call the company to set up an informational interview so you can learn more about the company and get your name out there.  Client example: James asked to speak to HR to learn more about his industry. He had a connection there already so used that person’s name, got more contacts and his foot in the door. Volunteer your time so you can get familiar with the company, gain work experience, and build a working relationship.  Client example: Jackie did this and got a new connection at a company, as well as a reference for her work. Make a Good Impression Follow these simple steps to make a good impression with hiring managers and other professionals you meet whether you meet them online, at an interview or at a networking event! Be assertive yet professional and courteous. Follow their instructions- don’t be a pest! Make sure your resume stands out- have it professionally written, that includes a unique combo of your skills, and has a professional summary at the top! The cover letter highlights those things as well. Pick up the phone. This means less email and passive strategies, people hire people- someone with a voice, not a piece of paper. Be on and use LinkedIn. This shows you care about your career. Know your brand. Have your elevator speech ready and practiced out loud with others. Network Your Way Into an Organization I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to be active in your job search on LinkedIn. Recruiters and employers search for leads all the time on LinkedIn. This is a great way to get third-party recommendations that you can use on your resume. Leaving an online footprint shows you are serious about your career and your job search. It’s an easy way to connect with employers and they can get acquainted with you. This allows you to showcase your skill set. Keep your profile accurate and up to date! Find Networking Events You need to make sure that you use your resources efficiently so you’re not wasting time. Find the networking events that are most worth your time. How do you do this? Look local and look industry specific Ask around and see what people know about and look online. Look for associations for your specific industry instead of job fairs with all occupations.  Find ones where there is a mix of people who are employed and those who are unemployed. Check out meetup groups where other people are participating and you have a common interest with them. Be strategic! Visit once, evaluate, then decide whether or not to go again. Remember, do not sit behind your computer. It is estimated that around 70% of jobs are found through networking and the hidden job market. The best way to predict your future is to create it. It’s all about the right action. Consistent, persistent action.
