Bring the power of progress into your one-to-one meetings

Bring the power of progress into your one-to-one meetingsBring the power of progress into your one-to-one meetingsAcknowledging team success via a Friday Wins Meeting like this one at content marketing tech firm Percolate has become standard practice at many companies. Many teams also informally share wins at their daily huddle meetings.Theres something exciting about celebrating a win with members of your team that can start the day off right, or wraps up an especially busy week.Beyond the momentary buzz that celebration provides, focus on success aids in a broader goal enhanced performance. The late social psychologist Kathryn Cramer coined the phrase Astischset-Based Thinking in which she encouraged people to focus on whats going right in their world, rather than focusing solely on problems that need fixing. When leaders shine the light on whats working, it opens up the potential for even bigger gains. In addition to group settings, theres another way you can use the idea of wins i n your leadership role during one-to-one meetings. Heres an example from my home life. Every Sunday night, I check in with my 17-year-old son, who will soon start the college application process. We review the weeks progress and set goals for the upcoming week. At the start of each meeting, he lists three wins (he defines what constitutes a win) for his week and we talk about it.This process works well becauseIt starts the meeting on a positive noteIncremental success is recognized, which maintains momentum as he works towards larger goalsHe decides what serves as a win therefore its more meaningful to himIts part of an established process that perpetuates framing of activities in terms of successAlthough he dislikes public praise, my introverted son is comfortable sharing his wins in a one-to-one settingAlthough I stumbled into this wins process on my own, it turns out that research backs up my hunch that a positive focus aids in goal achievement. In the Harvard Business Review art icle The Power of Small Wins, researchers Teresa Amabile and Steven J. Kramer describe the progress principle - the menschlich desire to feel that one is making progress on work that matters.Whether they are trying to solve a major scientific mystery or simply produce a high-quality product or service, everyday progress- even a small win- can make all the difference in how workers feel and perform, the authors write. Leaders who act as nourishers providing respect, encouragement and recognition are those best poised to help their team members capitalize on their daily (or weekly) wins.If your one-to-one meetings with staffers have become bogged down in detailed status updates and problem-solving, consider changing up the agenda. Ask your team members to start the next meeting with a list of two or three wins. Listen carefully and without judgement. Assure them that you arent looking for huge, blue ribbon achievements. If you continue this process for a while, youll discover precise ly what each of your employees finds worthy and rewarding. As Amabile and Stevens point out, their progress principle only works if people feel that their work is meaningful. Luckily, meaningful doesnt have to be life-altering.Meaning can be as simple as making a useful and high-quality product for a customer or providing a genuine service for a community, they explain. As a leader, its up to you to help connect the dots between team members wins and the value their work provides to your company and customers. In the process, not only will your team members experience satisfaction, their output will improve as well. And thats progress everyone can feel good about.Jennifer V. Understanding the Product Creates Sales Success

Understanding the Product Creates Sales SuccessUnderstanding the Product Creates Sales SuccessNearly all sales experts agree that knowing at least the basics about your product is critical to selling it effectively. However, understanding your product is even more helpful. The difference between product knowledge and product understanding? Knowledge is the facts and figures, while understanding is about realizing how those facts and figures affect the product owner. Knowledge vs. Understanding Product knowledge vs. product understanding is quite similar to the contrast between features and benefits. And just as features tell, benefits sell, a salesperson who focuses on product knowledge without product understanding misses the mark. For example, someone who sells cars probably knows all about the latest models acceleration features, the available paint colors, and whether it comes with a V6 or V8 engine. All of the above come under the category of product knowledge. But the sales person who understands his product knows what each of those factors will mean to different prospects. He knows that high acceleration will be attractive not only to the teenager who yearns for speed but also for the suburban mom who wants to be able to safely merge onto a busy freeway. Product knowledge is absolutely essential for salespeople, but by itself, it can create a bad case of expert-itis, especially in salespeople with a highly technical product or service. The result is often a salesperson who carries forth at length about product specifications that mean little or nothing to most prospects. An addiction to industry jargon is another common side effect. In extreme cases, these aspects of expert-itis can make a salespersons pitch completely unintelligible. And if your prospect cant understand what youre saying, shes not likely to buy from you? Product understanding, on the other hand, allows a salesperson to present these technical details in terms that make sense to pros pects. So a new computer with dual-core processors and two terabytes of hard drive storage could be pitched to a prospect as ...a computer that has plenty of room for all those movies you like to download, and still runs really fast Use the Product The best way to make the leap between knowledge and understanding is to use the product yourself. If your company gives you access to your products for free, then, by all means, take as many as you can and use them as much as possible. If you can also get copies of your competitors models, so much the better youll be able to explain exactly how your product is different and (hopefully) better. If your company cant or wont give you the product to try for yourself, then the next best option is to do a little market research. Set up appointments with a few of your best customers and ask them to tell you about their experiences with your companys products. Try to make it clear that you want brutal honesty, since there will almost always be ways in which your products are both good and bad and the more you know about both aspects, the better. In many ways, product understanding goes hand in hand with prospect understanding. The more information you have about both your products and your potential customers, the better youll be able to fit one to the other... the less time youll waste with matches that are doomed from the start... and the happier your customers will be.

Great Referral Sources for Salespeople

Great Referral Sources for SalespeopleGreat Referral Sources for SalespeopleNo matter what you sell, there are a lot of people out there who can benefit from buying it. The question becomes how to find and make contact with them. Some folks you regularly or not-so-regularly cross paths with can often introduce you to said people. Dont limit yourself to asking just your own customers for referrals. Think outside the customer box. 01Friends and FamilyUncle Fred might not be a qualified prospect, but he probably knows someone who is. Your family and friends can be a big help if you educate them a bit as to who your potential prospects are. Give them a few of your business cards and ask them to keep their ears open.02Professional ContactsDo you work with an accountant? A lawyer? Even a dry cleaner? All these are great sources for referrals. They talk with clients all day long and many may be great prospects for you. Just let the professional know what you sell, give them a stack of your business cards, and thank them a few dozen times If you find youre able to refer people back to these professionals, youll really get some enthusiastic help from them.03Other SalespeopleLook for salespeople who are incompatible industries and form a referral pact. If youre selling furniture, talk to an interior decorator and suggest that you trade referrals back and forth. If you sell gym memberships, befriend the team at your local athletic shoe store. The possibilities are endless.04Former ColleaguesYou probably worked somewhere else before you took your current sales position, even if it was just a summer job at McDonalds. By all means, keep in tick with the gang at your former place of employment. Unless theyre direct competitors of your current employer, they can be a terrific source of referrals.05Online AcquaintancesGot a Facebook page? How about LinkedIn? Mention what you sell in your bio, being as specific as possible. You can even make up informal contests, like promising to buy ice cream for the first person who sends you five referrals. Dont push too hard, though, or people will start dropping off your network.06The Guy Standing Behind You in LineAs youre standing around waiting to buy tickets to a movie, to get your picture taken at the DMV, or to pay for groceries at the supermarket, strike up a conversation with the person next to you. You usually dont have to pitch them hard to get a referral often all it takes is explaining what you sell and theyll spontaneously think of a friend whos in the market.07Closing the DealDont forget to send a thank you note when one of your referrers comes through for you and sends you a paying customer. Hell remember you, and your name will come to mind the next time hes talking with someone whos in the market to buy the tafelgeschirr or product youre selling. Hell probably tell the person to look you up. Maybe he even still has some of those business cards you gave him on hand.Customers Are EverywhereEveryone yo u meet every day is a potential customer or he knows someone who is. This doesnt mean you must spend your entire life in hard sales mode, but you can drop a word about what youre selling, then move on if interest isnt high. Maybe your neighbors sister isnt looking to buy a widget today, but she might need one tomorrow and shell think of you.

Shake Like You Mean It!

Shake Like You Mean It The handshake is a lost art. We fist-bump, high-five, chest-bump, give thumbs up, kiss cheeks, hug, and wave but our etiquette has so devolved that shaking handsis now rare. The handshake may be forgotten by many, but its bedrngnis obsolete, nor is it extinct by any means. It is leise the way professionals greet each other. Its also great when youre making a first impression to convert a stranger into a boss, mentor, colleague, companion, friend, or acquaintance. The handshakecan be traced all the way back to Greece in the fifth century B.C., if elend earlier. Some theorize it began as a gesture of grabbing one anothers forearm to prove that neither person was carrying a weapon.A person giving a weak handshakemay be likewise perceived as weak, whereas afirm handshake connotes confidence. A crushing grip turns off everybody, as does a limp, cold fish handshake. Grasping only someones fingers is awkward. Equally awkward are wet hands , which could result from nervousness or a sweating condition known as palmar hyperhidrosis. If you obsess over the approach, angle, grip, firmness, pumping, duration, and undocking, you may never want to meet anyone.Advanced handshaking includes leaning in patting the top of the other persons right hand with your left, or resting itunder their forearm, or using it to tap their shoulder or back and asserting dominance by pulling the person into you ( la Trump). Its very complicated, but dont stress its not necessary. Just keep your left hand at your side, not in your pocket. For now, the basic handshake should look and feel natural. That naturalness comes with practice, and thats what friends and family are for.Business professionals expect that they will be greeted with a handshake, so be preparedSmile, look the other person in the eyes, and say your name as you extend your right hand, with the thumb pointing upward and fingers pointed ahead. (Sorry, southpaws, but using your left h andcan be considered disrespectful unlessyour right hand is disabled or holding something).Couple the crook of your hand with theirs.Continue smiling and looking at the other person while you apply grip pressure equal to theirs. Makethe handshake firm, not crushing. During the grasps 2-4 second duration, your hand can remain steady, or you can move it up and down slightly but not side to side.A handshake isnt a tug of war or cheerleading routine. That said, even the pros get it wrong occasionally. If a handshake happens to turn into a Three Stooges bit, laugh and have fun with it. Be self-deprecating so the other person doesnt feel embarrassed. Youll both do better when saying goodbye.Lightly touching knuckles is not yet the norm, so lookyour new professional contactin the eyes and shake like you mean it.Ferris Kaplan is founder of Best Of You Resumes.

Robotic Caterpillar Crawls Ahead

Robotic Caterpillar Crawls Ahead Robotic Caterpillar Crawls Ahead Robotic Caterpillar Crawls AheadCaterpillars have met their robotic double. Well, maybe the real-life creatures havent met their robotic likeness, but the caterpillar robot does exist.Through a process called biomimetics, engineers borrow design ideas from natureincluding from the ways creators navigate their environmentto create engineered products that mimic the original. For robotic design, theyve looked to animals that move in ways uniquely suited to the jobs they need to perform. Spiders, for example, can travel quickly over bumpy, difficult terrain thanks to the hinged nature of their eight legs. So robotic spiders move over terrain impassible to most land vehicles. But until recently, engineers could only build robots that copy the way animals with relatively rigid skeletons and joints moved. Thats because robots traditionally rely on joints driven by hardwareusually electric or pneumatic actuatorsto move. But in t he natural world, a large number of creatures have soft bodies with which they navigate their habitats. Earthworms, snails, and larval insects employ different strategies to move through complex environments. Robots built to employ the same types of strategies could navigate irregular landscapes like the ocean floor, the sides of mountains, even the surface of a distant planet or the veins within a human body.Mikolaj Rogz (left) and Lukasz Zinkiewicz in the lab. Image University of WarsawNow, a team of researchers at the University of Warsaw has created a 15-millimeter soft-bodied robot that mimics the rippling way caterpillars move along flat surfaces. Like caterpillars, the robot can also climb slopes, squeeze through narrow slits, and transport loads and up to six times its own weight, says Piotr Wasylczyk, head of the universitys Photonic Nanostructure Facility, who led the robotic development team. The caterpillar robot is made entirely of plastic and feeds on light, says Mikola j Rogz, astudent at the university who helped design the robot.Difficult as it was to design soft-bodied robots, an even greater challenge was making them small, due to difficulties in power management and remote control. The need to pack actuators inside has kept miniaturization out of the equation, Wasylczyk says.Imagine agrown man pushing aFiat 126, he says.Designing soft robots calls for a new paradigm in terms of mechanics, power supply, and control, he adds. The robotic caterpillar looks a long way from popular conceptions of robots large, lumbering creatures made from metal with arms and legs or more simply, the robotic arm used on a factory line to lift and lower. This little guy resembles nothing so much as a tiny line of plastic. That is, in fact, what it is.The caterpillar robot contains no internal electronics. Its made completely from zerflossen crystal elastomer, a plastic comprised of polymer networks that respond to changes in light. The researchers shaped the plastic materials into three-dimensional forms with predefined actuation performance. The robot moves in response to a spatially modulated green laser beam that pinpoints and changes the shape of specific molecules in the plastic. The light-induced deformation allows a monolithic LCE structure to perform complex actions without numerous discrete actuators, Rogz says. When scanning the robot with alaser beam, you can only stimulate and heat selected parts of it. This is how you decide which way the robot moves, he says. The deformation process is fully reversible, Rogz adds. Once you cool the material down, it resumes its original shape. And it goes without saying that such a small robot is easily transported. In the future, the caterpillar robot could be employed to assemble items into place. Or, it could be inserted into the human body to transport medicines directly to a human organ, a process called targeted medicine, Rogz adds. That process could be about a decade away, however, as research ers would need to find a new way to power the robot. Light, of course, couldnt reach within the body, he says.Research into robots that dont contain internal power systems or engines, but that can be steered externally, whether through light or another source, is just beginning, Rogz says. Were not yet at the point of looking closer at that caterpillar crawling across the yard to determine if its real or robotic. But like actual caterpillars, their robotic counterparts will be a necessary addition to the workings of everyday life.Jean Thilmany is an independent writer. When scanning the robot with a laser beam, you can only stimulate and heat selected parts of it. This is how you decide which way the robot moves.Mikolaj Rogz, University of Warsaw

5 Things Hiring Managers Want From Job Seekers

5 Things Hiring Managers Want From Job Seekers 5 Things Hiring Managers Want From Job Seekers Has your job search only been met with frustration in 2014? Wouldn’t it be great to start the new year with a new job? Let’s assume you have all the experience, knowledge and skills necessary for role you seek. You might think that's all that should be important. But then your applications get ignored, and the answers you do get amount to a pile of rejections.  You might ask yourself: “What’s wrong with this system?”   Step back, and use this season to get a better sense of the process in which you are engaged. Try looking at it from the vantage point of human resources screeners and hiring mangers.  When you forget your own frustrations and focus instead on how to make those of the hiring manager disappear, you’ll turn your  résumé  and your presence into presents that every hiring manager will prize. The intent here isn’t to garner pity for those who control the hiring process, but rather to understand the world as they experience it and use this understanding to create a professional persona that will be both refreshing and valued. First and foremost, remember that for all the talk of nameless, faceless hiring processes, behind the veil are real human beings who are besieged by far too many things to do in a day, with limited resources to get them done.  They see scores of cover letters daily, each boasting how great their authors are for the job. But rarely do these letters actually build the case and lead them to make that conclusion for themselves. Hiring managers see candidates who present themselves variously as entitled, desperate, inarticulate, rude and disrespectful. Hint: When you can avoid all of these things, you are well on your way to making friends and allies among those who can really be of great help to you. Keep in mind that there are a few elements that HR staff and hiring managers regularly have to deal with:Applicants blithely sending in their  résumés for jobs for which they aren’t remotely qualified.Applicants bending themselves into pretzels to try to be whatever the hiring manager wants them to be, rather than telling their own story in a compelling fashion. For example, take the person who at one moment describes himself as a self-starter lone-wolf type, and then goes on to talk about how he relishes working as part of a team. Define your narrative and stick to it, and don’t contradict yourself!Almost every candidate claims to have excellent communications skills  Ã¢€" and then they demonstrate quite the opposite by making simple spelling and grammatical mistakes.Applicant tracking systems are stuffed with  résumés that are slapped together with little care and others  using the same standard Word templates that everyone else uses. There are countless  résumés that  con vey lots of data but offer no clear narrative. At the other extreme, hiring managers encounter over-the-top, professionally composed  résumés  with form and  content clearly not those of the candidate himself. Hiring managers cringe when they take the trouble to actually phone screen a potentially good candidate, only to find someone who is "too smart by half." These are the people who say that something like salary is “negotiable” without giving a more reasonable, if not more revealing, answer.Hiring managers are bored out of their minds when someone talks for five minutes nonstop in response to a simple icebreaker question like, “tell me about yourself.” With the above factors in mind, here’s what you can do to make yourself a truly valued candidate: 1. Can the canned or over-produced cover letter and  résumé. Take pains to make sure each sentence actually conveys information in a compelling, articulate fashion. And avoid the overworked cliches, like, “I was excited to see your opening.”   2. Don’t play games or waste time. Listen carefully for clues to the kind of information that the decision makers need, and respond in a forthright, honest fashion. Yes, they want to get to know you, but they probably don’t care about what you minored in when you were in college in the ‘80s. 3. Do your homework.  This is true not only at the interview stage, but even at the beginning. Show that you’ve researched the company and why you want to work there. (Hint: It's more than a paycheck!) Don’t ask about things you can and should find out for yourself! Job interviews are anything but casual “get to know you” networking meetings. If you are invited in, you can bet that the HR team, hiring manager and perhaps others have thoroughly evaluated your background. How to Know if Quitting Your Jobs a Good Idea - The Muse

How to Know if Quitting Your Jobs a Good Idea - The Muse How to Know if Quitting Your Jobs a Good Idea If you’ve ever dreamed about speaking your mind to your horrible boss and then walking out, head held high, you’re not alone. Enticing as it is to fantasize about sticking it to the man (or woman) who’s largely responsible for making your life miserable, few of us actually act on these impulses- and for good reason. Burning bridges and acting without a modicum of professionalism isn’t recommended. And so, whether it’s a bad manager or a disorganized company with a questionable mission, we stay. We’re essentially in limbo, not happy but not quite miserable enough to leave. We sit in meetings, mentally rehearsing our parting shots to our sarcastic boss, grumpy co-workers, and high-maintenance customers. After all, they’re obviously the problem, right? Sometimes it’s as cut and dry as that, but it’s not always the case. Blaming other people or the company itself for your dissatisfaction without ever stopping to consider if the problem is you is a dangerous move. And so is just quitting your job if you haven’t fully thought things through. Over the past decade of assisting professionals in transitioning to new roles, I’ve confirmed that career happiness (or lack thereof) depends on a number of different factors- it’s not always about good or bad co-workers. To help you get a more complete picture, I’ve developed a three-part framework to help you decide if, in the infamous words of the Clash, “Should I stay or should I go?” Part 1: What’s the Problem? What tasks, activities, and projects occupy most of my day? If I were performing those same activities with different people within my same company, would I be happy? What if I were performing those activities with the same team in a different organization? Sometimes unhappiness in one area (you sit in an extremely loud area of the open office, your regional manager is intolerable) colors your entire work experience, and before you know it, you're going from, “I hate the quarterly supervisor’s visit” to “I hate my job! I need to get out of here.” But what happens when you put your emotions (and their source) in perspective. Realizing you love your team but hate taking customer complaints is valuable info, as is knowing that your daily commute is causing you mental anguish. Of course, if your list includes literally everything about your job- your micromanaging boss, the work itself, the CEO, the location, your compensation, limited perks, and so on- then it may really not be you that’s the problem Part 2: How Long Has the Problem Persisted? When I think back over the past six to 12 months, are there similar patterns of unhappiness? Have I always been unhappy in this position, or is this new? If I haven’t always felt this way, can I trace my unhappiness to a particular incident? There are bound to be ups and downs no matter where you are. If you’re an accountant, tax time’s always going to be a stressful period. If you’re a teacher, quarterly progress reports may always make you slightly crazed. If your team is being restructured, you can expect to feel some turmoil during the transition. If your dissatisfaction’s relatively new, it may be a blip on the radar that’ll resolve itself over time, particularly if you can trace your discontent to a temporary situation, like a co-worker going on leave, or a new boss bumbling along as he finds his way. Sometimes, though, your job is just a bad fit. If you’ve never really been satisfied in your current position, expecting things to “get better” on their own is probably unrealistic. And if there’s nothing that you can do personally to make your situation better, it probably is a signal that it’s time to leave. READY TO START LOOKING AROUND, JUST TO SEE WHAT'S OUT THERE? No harm in doing that! Especially when we know a ton of great companies hiring. Just click here Part 3: What Do You Want? What would my ideal work experience- activities, team members, company- look like? If I were in charge of this company, what three changes would I make immediately? By comparing your uncensored “ideal” to your “reality,” you can identify mismatches. Once you see those gaps, ask yourself, “How likely is it that this will change for the better?” If your first move as company president would be to fire the entire management staff and re-create the company’s product line, you’re in for an uphill battle. But if your top priority would be to pipe music in the employee cafeteria, you’ve got a better chance of finding lasting happiness at your current company, because your disconnects are relatively minor. Before you give up on your current company, see what you can salvage. It’s often much easier to transfer to a new role within your same team or company, than to start over from square one somewhere else. I’d love to say there’s an absolute “right” and “wrong” time to leave your company, but it’s not that easy. Choosing whether to quit is a multi-faceted decision that requires some serious reflection. These questions are a great start. Compare your reality with your dreams, and see how far off you are. The “ideal” position for you is out there somewhere, but finding it may be like moving across a chessboard: You might have to make a few lateral moves before you get headed in the right direction. What a Shift in the Supreme Court Could Mean for Recruitment

What a Shift in the Supreme Court Could Mean for Recruitment What a Shift in the Supreme Court Could Mean for Recruitment What a Shift in the Supreme Court Could Mean for Recruitment Rossheim With a new administration and Congress poised to take charge in Washington, many in the business community are pondering the possible impact on employers. The same anticipation surrounds the potential impact of new Supreme Court nominees on 2017 recruitment and the staffing industry. If President Donald Trumps first nomination to the Supreme Court is conservative and pro-business, the court may return to an approximation of its composition before the February 2016 death of conservative Justice Antonin Scalia. Trumps first nominee might not make a difference; Kennedy would still be the swing vote, says Jo Bennett, a labor and employment partner with Schnader Harrison Segal Lewis. But if any of the courts three eldest members are replaced during Trumps term, the court is likely to shift to a decisively conservative majority. Staffing firms should take note. A lot of our Supreme Court justices are elderly, and who is put in there will be pivotal, says Rena McDonald, attorney and owner of McDonald Law Group in Las Vegas. Heres how some Supreme Court scenarios could play out for 2017 staffing. Employers may be less motivated to curb W-2 employment. In recent years, employers have been reaching out to staffing agencies because of all the regulatory requirements in how they treat employees, says Nancy Hammer, senior government affairs policy counsel at the Society for Human Resource Management. With a more conservative top court, staffing firms could see some of their clients keep more jobs in-house. While Hammer sees this impact as very industry-specific, were going to see changes in how employers behave if they are relieved of some of that burden. Government may retrench on co-employment claims. A more conservative court may back off on controlling the workplace, going back to existing statute, says Hammer. Joint employment is at the top of the list, because Browning-Ferris was a real sea change. Staffing agencies have a fear of being considered a joint employer. In Browning-Ferris, the National Labor Relations Board(NLRB) opened the door to the interpretation of supplier-customer relationships as joint employment arrangements. I think the Federal government will go back to a more traditional view: that the host employer must exercise control for there to be joint employment, says Fiona Coombe, director of legal and regulatory research at Staffing Industry Analysts. Maybe employers shouldnt fear joint employment but rather recognize that it exists, adds Coombe, and ensure that their staffing employees fall outside the criteria for co-employment. More employers may be able to count on arbitration to resolve disputes with employees. In many cases, under President Obama, theNLRB ruled against employers who attempted to force employees to arbitrate disputes. The evolving NLRB and Supreme Court may be friendlier to arbitration as an acceptable alternative to expensive legal battles as a means for resolving disputes between employers and employees, Hammer says. This could, in turn, give companies one less reason to turn to staffing firms. The legal and regulatory gap between the U.S. and progressive states may widen. With a conservative Federal government and dozens of blue states heading in opposite directions, the patchwork regulatory environment of these divided United States is a possible source of concern for both staffing firms and their clients. Differences among workers rights in Federal, state and local jurisdictions may well be a greater strategic consideration in coming years, says Coombe. Across the country, for example, there are now 39 jurisdictions, cities and states, with respect to paid sick leave. This creates a lot of work for employers, and its a selling point for staffing firms. Its not just the extra pay; its administering requests for leaves and ensuring coverage for workers on leave. Although the gap between Federal paid-leave mandates and the requirements of some states like California may widen over the next four years, employers who have treated employees better have gotten payback in the form of employee loyalty, says Deborah Widiss, a professor of law at Indiana University. Less aggressive protection for workers on sexual and gender orientation. I do think the configuration of the court will be important to cases involving discrimination by sexual orientation, says Widiss. If the court is less aggressive about protecting the workplace rights of people with minority sexual orientations, staffing firms may feel competitive pressure to accommodate client companies that have discriminatory hiring policies. Lower court appointments could accelerate change. Supreme Court replacements are not the only judicial appointments of interest to staffing firms and their customers. The labor and management law agenda is shaped first in Federal trial courts. With many of his nominations stalled by partisan politics, President Obama leaves office with approximately 100 vacant judges benches in Federal district and appellate courts. Thats about twice as many lower-court vacancies as were left by President George W. Bush. With the GOP in control of the Senate, President Trump is likely to see his judicial nominations confirmed relatively quickly. Appointments in the lower Federal courts matter a lot too, says Widiss. Were likely to see more pro-business judges.

4 ways sleeping naked makes you healthier and wealthier

4 ways sleeping naked makes you healthier and wealthier 4 ways sleeping naked makes you healthier and wealthier What if I told you in just 10 seconds a day, you can sleep better, make more money, reduce stress, and lose weight? Sleeping naked can do all these things and more. All you have to do is take off your clothes. While there are countless strategies floating around out there to help you improve in these areas, none is as simple- and many are less effective- as stripping down before you go to sleep.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Since only 8% of people sleep naked, most everyone can discover the benefits of sleeping in the buff. This may sound far-fetched, but hear me out before you throw those cozy flannel pajamas on.You Sleep Better NakedWe’ve always known that quality sleep is good for your brain, but recent research from the University of Rochester demonstrates exactly how so. The study found that when you sleep your brain removes toxic proteins from its neurons that are by-products of neural activity when you’re awake. The catch here is that your brain can only adequately remove these toxic proteins when you have sufficient quality sleep. When you don’t get high-quality, deep sleep, the toxic proteins remain in your brain cells, wreaking havoc and ultimately impairing your ability to think. This slows your ability to process information and problem solve, kills your creativity, and increases your emotional reactivity.Researchers at the University of Amsterdam found that lowering your skin temperature increases the depth of your sleep and reduces the number of times you wake up in the night. Stripping down to your birthday suit is a great way to lower your skin temperature without changing the temperature of the room.Sleeping Naked Reduces StressWe all know that prolonged stress is bad news. It suppresses your immune system and increases your risk of heart disease, depression, and obesity in addition to decreasing your cognitive performance. Str ess throws your cortisol levels out of whack. Proper rest helps to restore normal cortisol levels, which improves your stress level regardless of what’s happening around you. As described in the section above, sleeping naked will help you to get a better night’s sleep.Sleeping Naked Is HealthierSleeping naked has a slew of health benefits, including helping you to lose weight. A study conducted by the US National Institutes of Health found that keeping yourself cool while you sleep speeds the body’s metabolism because your body creates more brown fat to keep you warm. Brown fat produces heat by burning calories (300 times more heat than any organ in the body), and this boosts your metabolism all day long to help you lose weight. In addition to the metabolic effects of sleeping in the buff, removing your clothes improves blood circulation, which is good for your heart and muscles. The quality sleep you’ll enjoy also increases the release of growth hormone and melatonin, both o f which have anti-aging benefits.Sleeping Naked Builds ConfidenceConfidence doesn’t just feel good; it’s the pillar of success. It pushes you to try new things, take on challenges, and persevere in the face of adversity. A University of Melbourne study found that confident people earn higher wages and get promoted more often than their less confident counterparts. Sleeping naked makes you more comfortable in your own skin. As your comfort with your body increases, so does your self-esteem and confidence.Bringing It All TogetherThe benefits of sleeping naked are many- so many that you owe it to yourself to give it a try.  Did you know there was so much to gain from sleeping naked?
